Although these tests differ by jurisdiction, their shared purpose is to identify conditions before symptoms appear, allowing families and clinicians to begin evaluation and treatment as quickly as possible.
The origins of modern newborn screening are closely associated with the work of American microbiologist Robert Guthrie. During the 1960s, Guthrie developed a simple method for testing dried blood collected from an infant’s heel for phenylketonuria, or PKU, an inherited disorder that can cause severe intellectual disability when untreated. The test made it practical to screen large numbers of newborns, and public health programs began adopting it. Early detection followed by dietary treatment demonstrated the powerful preventive value of population-based screening and helped establish newborn screening as a public-health responsibility.
