On October 9, 1985, researchers Harry Kroto, Robert Curl, Richard Smalley, and their colleagues reported evidence of a previously unknown form of carbon consisting of 60 atoms arranged in a hollow, soccer-ball-shaped structure. The molecule was later named buckminsterfullerene because its geometry resembles the geodesic domes associated with architect and inventor Buckminster Fuller.

The discovery emerged from experiments examining carbon vapor produced by vaporizing graphite with a laser. The research team found an unusually stable carbon cluster with 60 atoms. Its structure was not immediately confirmed, but subsequent work established that C₆₀ was a spherical cage made of interconnected five- and six-membered rings.
