History
The **International Day of Radiology** is observed annually on **November 8**, commemorating Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen’s discovery of X-rays on November 8, 1895. While experimenting with cathode rays in Würzburg, Germany, Röntgen noticed that a nearby fluorescent screen began to glow even though the apparatus was covered. He identified the unknown radiation as “X-rays” and soon produced the first X-ray image of a human body part—an image of his wife Bertha’s hand. The discovery transformed medical diagnosis and earned Röntgen the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.
The observance was established in 2012 through cooperation among the European Society of Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America, and the American College of Radiology. It followed the European Day of Radiology, first held in 2011, and expanded the commemoration into a worldwide event. Choosing November 8 linked the modern observance directly to the historic scientific breakthrough that gave rise to diagnostic radiology.
Over time, the International Day of Radiology has developed into both a professional observance and a public education initiative.
