History
International Biodiesel Day is observed on August 10 in recognition of an early milestone in the history of vegetable-oil fuels. On August 10, 1893, German inventor Rudolf Diesel is widely credited with demonstrating an engine running on peanut oil at the Augsburg exhibition in Germany. Although modern biodiesel had not yet been developed, the experiment illustrated Diesel’s broader idea that engines could operate on fuels derived from agricultural products rather than petroleum alone.
The observance also reflects the longer development of plant-based and renewable fuels. Diesel’s original engine concept was designed to use a range of fuels, and vegetable oils were among the possibilities considered during the early history of compression-ignition engines. Interest in such fuels declined for much of the twentieth century as petroleum became inexpensive and widely available. During periods of fuel shortages and rising oil prices, however, researchers and farmers repeatedly revisited vegetable oils as potential alternatives.
Modern biodiesel emerged more clearly in the late twentieth century through processes that convert vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled cooking oils into a fuel suitable for diesel engines. This fuel is chemically different from unprocessed vegetable oil and can be blended with conventional diesel in varying proportions. Advances in production, fuel standards, and engine technology helped biodiesel move from small-scale experimentation toward commercial use in transportation, agriculture, and other diesel-dependent sectors.
